Explore the route and altimetry to relive this mythical climb

227.0KM – 5500M+
Description

The Ötztaler Radmarathon is not just a granfondo: it's an alpine dream dressed in effort. Starting from Sölden, in the Austrian Ötztal, it takes cyclists on a 227-kilometer loop with 5,500 meters of elevation gain across four passes that seem like chapters of an epic tale: the Kühtai (2,020 m), the Brenner (1,377 m), the Jaufenpass (2,090 m), and finally the Timmelsjoch — the Passo Rombo at 2,474 meters — the supreme judge of a day that shows no mercy.

Here, you're not just racing against others, but against the heat of the valley floor, the altitude, cramps, and the fear of giving up. The final ramps of the Timmelsjoch — with inclines up to 14% and almost 1,800 meters of elevation gain to absorb after over 200 km of racing — turn every bend into a question with no easy answer: how badly do you truly want to finish? It's a race won with the mind even before the legs, and lost the moment you stop believing.

Born in 1982, the Ötztaler has become one of the most legendary amateur races in the world. Today, the 4,000 available spots are allocated by lottery: securing one already means entering into legend. Every year, it attracts participants from dozens of countries — an army of cyclists chasing the same dream: to start in the dark from Sölden and return to the finish line with an empty heart, spent legs, and the unique feeling of having crossed the Alps like heroes.
