Description
The Tour of Flanders — the Ronde van Vlaanderen — is Flanders' most beloved race and one of the toughest Monument Classics in world cycling: 254 kilometers from Antwerp to Oudenaarde across 19 "bergs", those short, brutal, cobblestoned climbs that exist nowhere else in the world. A race that doesn't kill with mountains, but with the relentless accumulation of fatigue.
The first 100 kilometers pass uneventfully, almost deceptively. Then the Katterberg and the first passage over the Oude Kwaremont mark the beginning of the real battle. The central sequence is a relentless trap: Kortekeer, Eikenberg, Wolvenberg, Moleberg, Berendries, Valkenberg, the Ten Houte with its kilometer of cobblestones at 20%, the Koppenberg with gradients up to 22%. But it's the final duo — Kwaremont and Paterberg (370 meters, up to 20%) just 13 km from the finish line — that delivers the final verdict. Those who haven't blown up before, blow up there.
The Ronde was born in 1913 at the behest of journalist Karel Van Wynendaele: 37 riders, 324 kilometers of Flemish roads, an idea that would become legend. It is the only major Classic not to have been interrupted during World War II. Fiorenzo Magni, the "Lion of Flanders", won it for three consecutive years from 1949 to 1951; Fabian Cancellara dominated it three times in five years. He who wins in Flanders does not become a champion: he becomes a hero.
