Explore the route and altimetry to relive this mythical climb

Description

Corno alle Scale is the mountain of Bologna, the peak of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines that dominates the province of the Emilian capital and which the Giro d'Italia 2026 has chosen as the finish line for stage 9 – the last of the first week, the one that shakes up the standings before the rest day.

The bike climb from Lizzano in Belvedere is 11 kilometers long with a 645-meter elevation gain and an average gradient of 5.9%, a figure that does not tell the true nature of this ascent. The middle kilometers flow almost regularly, with the road climbing through the dense woods of the Apennines without ever being brutally steep. Then, in the last three kilometers, everything changes: the gradient steadily exceeds 10%, with peaks of 14.4%, transforming what seemed like a manageable finish into a physical reckoning for anyone who miscalculated in the previous 180 kilometers. The final straight, at around 7%, is almost a sigh of relief after the burst of effort.

The Giro d'Italia had not climbed Corno alle Scale since 2004, when Gilberto Simoni was the first to cross the finish line at altitude. In 2026, the pink race returns to this peak after over twenty years of absence, with the 184 km Cervia–Corno alle Scale stage scheduled for May 17: an Apennine finish, severe and authentic, far from the big names of the Alps but no less decisive.
