Explore the route and altimetry to relive this mythical climb
Description
The Monte Zoncolan from Ovaro is not a climb: it is a verdict. In just over 10 kilometers, this Friulian colossus gains 1,210 meters in elevation with an average gradient of 11.9%, reaching peaks of 22%: numbers that have consecrated it as one of the most feared ascents in Europe, a worthy rival of the Mortirolo and the Spanish Angliru.
The first kilometers from Ovaro still give the illusion of a possible pact with the mountain: the road climbs through the green of Carnia with manageable, almost courteous gradients. But after Liariis, around the third kilometer, the pact breaks. The road stops communicating with the cyclist: it enters the woods, narrows, rears up, and for about 6 kilometers travels at an average of almost 15%— an asphalt wall that offers no respite or explanation. The three short final tunnels seem part of a ritual, the last act before the judgment on the summit at 1,750 meters.
The Giro d'Italia discovered the Zoncolan in 2003: Gilberto Simoni won with a masterful performance, but the most indelible memory of that day is Marco Pantani, who battled with everything he had left on that unprecedented climb — fifth at the finish line, already a legend. It was the last time the Pirate would challenge a mountain like that.
